COVER PHOTOGRAPH
Good-natured prodding was ongoing between the sales department and product engineering for years. Sales typically wanted more tractor horsepower for customers, while engineers were dealing with the concerns of countless issues related to available materials, processes, and manufacturing limitations. It was easier to say “more power” than it was to pull it out of a hat, but knowing that didn’t discourage the sales department from asking.

When the 5020 was introduced, with buckets more power than anything Deere had done up to that time (the 8020 doesn’t count), the engineers presented the sales manager with a special (touched-up) studio photo. The impressive tractor had the right number (6, as in cylinders), a racing stripe, and even boasted of its 531 cubic inches.
